As a child Richard was neglected by his mother. His father was very close to him and died at a very early age for Speck. His mother got remarried to Linberg. Linberg helped her with finances but was a drunk with a criminal record for forgery and drunk driving. He kicked Speck out of the house as a teen.
To get even, Speck would break into the house and steal all of Linberg’s alcohol. In his teens, Speck started hanging around older people. He started doing drugs and getting drunk all the time. He met Shirley Malone and made her his girlfriend and the mother of his first born after 3 weeks of dating. Speck used use his paychecks to pay off prostitutes.
After a while, Speck believed that his wife was cheating on him so he decided to torture her. He would park his car in front of their home and have sex with prostitutes while his wife watched from the window. Their marriage got so bad that he refused to pay Sherley’s medical bill. Richard went to jail and when he came out he was demanding sex from Shirley 4-5 times a day. If she refused he stopped and choked her.
Richards dream was to make headlines. At the age of 24, he went back to Dallas, Texas where his siblings lived. He wanted to recapture his childhood and recovery good memories before his father died. For 2 months Richard was doing really well and had his life sorted out. After finding out the Shirley remarried, Richard quit his job, bought drugs and moved into a cheap motel.
Speck developed an obsession with trying to avenge his wife’s betrayal. April 2, 1966 he broke into the home of a 65 year old woman. He tied her up and blindfolded her telling her that she would not be harmed if she complied. He raped her and left. Richard then started thinking about “The perfect crime,” so he started to plot.
July 14, 1966, Speck broke into a student nurse townhouse in South Chicago Community Hospital. Speck threatened the woman with a gun and knife and robbed their house. Speck forced 3 women into another room where there were 3 other women. Speck assured the women he was only going to rob them. He raped, strangled, and killed each of these women. One was stabbed in the eye. Another was stabbed more than 18 times. Some were strewn like dolls. Some were piled ontop of eachother. One was found downstairs sodomized and tortured more than the rest of the girls.
July 16,1966, Speck was found at a 99 cent hotel with his wrists slit in an attempt of suicide. He was sentenced to 400 years in jail. He wanted people to know that he killed them. Speck enjoyed his time in prison. He even started taking estrogen pills to develop breasts so that he would look appealing to other inmates. Speck felt no remorse and said he regrets nothing. He even bragged about killing the woman and made jokes about it to his inmates. Richard died of a heart attack, December 5, 1991, a day before his birthday.
