Civil Rights

English

For English I wrote two poems. The poem on the left is in the perspective of an African American woman trying to sit at a "Whites only" counter.  The poem on the right is in the perspective of a White man trying to move the woman away from the counter.

SPIT

Spit
I feel it on my face
It's warm
Full of hatred
Hatred for me
My race
My identity
It's unbearable
I have to get through this
They call me nigger
Worthless
Waste of space
I trained for this
I want this
It's the only way
I want rights
I need my rights
Why can't they see
Why can't they understand
I'm just human
Just like them
A person
Pain
But
No
I love,
Feel
I don't deserve this
I should sit where I want
Eat where I want
Love who I want
Get a education
To them...
 I'm just like
But...
Spit
Spit
That's what I do to her face
I hate those things
They're not people
They don't deserve to breathe
She doesn't deserve to be here
They don't even have a brain
That nigger can go with her own kind
She's just like dirt
They say the wants "rights"
They're not even human
They don't need anything
I'm gonna treat her like I treat
Eat where I eat
Sit where I sit
Vote for people?
Ha
She's worthless
Unwanted
Spit

Getting out of the Darkness (Art)

My art piece is about the African American women, and men getting out of the darkness. At the bottom you can see the people that are trying to break free from the darkness. They're trying to get to the light, but they have been stuck in the darkness for so long that their perception of the outside world, the "light" is blurry. Not having any idea of what's up there when they get out, the only thing they do know that's up there is church. Getting to the church isn't a easy journey; walking along the path that leads to their goal is long, and tiresome.
