Overview-Sense Of Place
This project "Where Do I Fit In"focuses on society and the important roles in it. It shows people that the most important roles are the ones that give back to society the most. The project involves also a relation of important roles in society today compared to that of the late 1700's. It's all really a reflection of assessing yourself and what you do for society/your community.

The Parallel 1700s vs Today
When looking at the roles in a modern community compared to that of the late 1700’s community job titles and the way the job is done differs.Throughout time jobs have to differ to fit into the fast moving society.Despite these differences, the communities are somewhat the same in the way jobs are valued. As long as the jobs are valued, a community can continue to run smoothly. In the late 1700’s there were jobs that would mirror current day jobs. One being the errand boy, who was the paperboy for the the printer. The job of the errand boy was to deliver news to all of the townspeople for them to know all of the politics going on. This helped the community know that they would always be informed on what was going on. Another job done in the 1700’s that was an important role in a community was a baker who made baked goods for the community. The community would come for bread and other baked goods that they couldn't just buy at the store like today. So this let the community always have a place to get food. Next there was the job of the school teacher where they the show the children the skills they will need in the future such as cooking for their family. This was because you usually learned the skill/trade of your older counterpart such as your father or mother. Also this would make sure each job was filled through each generation. Next there were the people who policed themselves in the town that would keep an eye on the people and make sure nothing goes wrong in the community. They believed this was the best way to be judged by your peers at the time with no real police force at hand. Also this held everyone accountable for their actions in the community. In today's society there are jobs such as a mailman that delivers important news to many different people just like the errand boy did in the 1700’s. This job is important because it lets people know who is trying to contact them and why. There are not many bakers left in the community but, there are places like maple donuts that provide donuts and coffee for a community. Places like bakeries now aren't as vital with making bread and things of that nature but, do provide a comforting place for people. Now the school teacher's job is done in a more professional manner teaching students a variety of things that they will use past their home life. This is because life has progressed past just doing what your older generation did and you have the right, to have the job you want. Now there are police officers instead of people policing themselves to help keep society safe by keeping order among all of the people. Included with that there are strict guidelines officers now need to follow. The jobs have definitely changed since the late 1700’s as in the way the jobs are done, or maybe even the title of the jobs. Though different in ways they still let the community run smoothly by providing the same service in different ways. The mailman and the errand boy both delivered news to people just in a different way with not as much physical paperwork. The baker is just like a current maple donuts that provide baked goods for the community. And lastly there is now police officers roaming our streets instead of people policing themselves to help keep order in community. So as long as important roles are getting done in society in some way communities can continue to run smoothly. The important roles being filled in a community is what keeps society safe and running knowing that key roles are being accomplished regularly. That is why true community doesn’t change as long as there are always others giving back.“All that is valuable in human society depends upon the opportunity for development accorded the individual.”-Albert Einstein Art Portion

Small Comfort
Coffee and cigarettes in a clean cafe,
forsythia lit like a damp match against
a thundery sky drunk on its own ozone,
the laundry cool and crisp and folded away
again in the lavender closet-too late to find
comfort enough in such small daily moments
of beauty, renewal, calm, too late to imagine
people would rather be happy than suffering
and inflicting suffering. We're near the end,
but O before the end, as the sparrow's wing
each night to their secret nests in the elm's green dome
O let the last bus bring
love to lover, let the starveling
dog turn the corner and lope suddenly
miraculously, down its own street, home.
—Katha Pollitt
I picked this poem relating to sense of place because the poet seems to have a better understanding of society than most. Knowing how bad society is today to this poet she still finds small comfort in everyday life and the experiences that she makes. Knowing the end is inevitable you still live life to the fullest.
Happiness
just no accounting for happiness,
or the way it turns up like a prodigal
who comes back to the dust at your feet
having squandered a fortune far away.
And how can you not forgive?
You make a feast in honor of what
was lost, and take from its place the finest
garment, which you saved for an occasion
you could not imagine, and you weep night and day
to know that you were not abandoned,
that happiness saved its most extreme form
for you alone.
No, happiness is the uncle you never
knew about, who flies a single-engine plane
onto the grassy landing strip, hitchhikes
into town, and inquires at every door
until he finds you asleep midafternoon
as you so often are during the unmerciful
hours of your despair.
It comes to the monk in his cell.
It comes to the woman sweeping the street
with a birch broom, to the child
whose mother has passed out from drink.
It comes to the lover, to the dog chewing
a sock, to the pusher, to the basket-maker,
and to the clerk stacking cans of carrots
in the night.
It even comes to the boulder
in the perpetual shade of pine barrens,
to rain falling on the open sea,
to the wineglass, weary of holding wine.
—Jane Kenyon
I also picked this poem to relate back to sense of place because it takes a while in life to find your happiness. You look through multiple lenses through your life to find what will make you happy and in the end you want to do what makes you happy. I liked this poem because it states different kinds of happiness. This made me wonder what my happiness is. It’s not sitting around all my life doing nothing to help others but rather continuing to work to do what I can to help society.
Keep on Keeping on
by Michael Sage
We’ve all had times, when the going gets tough
The smooth ride suddenly, feels bumpy and rough
The good times are gone, it’s all rather gruff
You let out a sigh and exclaim – “I’ve had enough”
We are all entitled at times, to gripe and to moan
What’s happened to my life, you say with a groan?
My backpack seems weighed down, by a very big stone
How do I move away, from this miserable zone?
When a curved ball hits you, through a trick or a con
Remember the good days, when the sun always shone
Go forward with the belief, that you already have won
The best advice I can give, is to keep on - keeping on
Lastly I picked this poem for sense of place because like it says in society everyone will face a time when the road gets bumpy and you have to decide if your going to keep going or give up. We are entitled thinking that we may be the only ones going through this experience but we must understand that we are not the only ones. You must engrave your sense of place by going forward with your belief and statement in society.
If A Car Was A Person
Ever wonder if a car was a person,it's steering
being your mind drifting turn after turn,
how would it feel, pressing down the gas pedal
taking you place to place,
whenever you want to go somewhere, how
important would that person be to you, when
an emergency happens it takes you where you
need to go in a hurry, starting without a hitch,
but the sad thing is, most
of us don't share that strong of a bond with our car,
but then again most of us don't share that strong of a bond,
with people just as important as having a good car.
I made this poem because I thought it fit in with current day society. Most people don't share that close of a bond with their car that takes them everywhere which is understandable because car is not a person no matter which way you cut it. But the thing is there people who do a lot more than just get from place to place but also protect you from harm and provide a safe community. How can someone not value everything that is being done for them in this country/ their community. I related the car to being a person to try and make you connect to how important a car would be to you if it was somebody just like all the other important roles in society. I'd figure it would mean a lot and that you would want a strong bond with it just like you should have a strong bond with the important roles in society around you.
Society
Being sustained is what keeps
The people sleeping, it's what keeps the police
officer up for a night shift, what keeps the firemen coming,
for no fire, what keeps the mailman coming with junk mail, it's
what helps us find meaning to help others that live in it, something
that keeps teachers in the schools teaching everyone,
it keeps the doctor tending to all of our needs,
what keeps the farmers farming but
never complaining, what lets you fail,
but try again, what tells the soldiers to
Protect our beautiful country that is too complex to understand.
I made this poem just like the other one to show just how important society running smoothly is. You need the hard work of everyone for it to continue on the path. The problem is people don't understand just how important all of these roles are and how they need to be done. People do their jobs to benefit the well being of everyone else. Like I said on the last word of each line keeps the police (people) coming being something everyone needs but fail to understand. We don't know just how much is being done around us because you are looking for how you're going to pull your weight.
