Being a proud Filipino American I've experienced my own fair share of ignorance to Asian culture. However, as of late I have been noticing more and more the misrepresentation of Asian culture in society. So for my first project I've chosen to focus on this topic.
Project Overview
Since this was the first project of Apollo I decided to play it safe and create a Powerpoint. Not very exciting, but I wanted to test the water out first and get a feel for what Apollo is. I made sure that my research was as thorough as possible--so that I could make up for the fact that I was only doing a Powerpoint-- and actually ended up with over 70 slides.
Social Studies |
English |
For my social studies focus I researched Asian immigration to the US in the late 1800s, and namely the Yellow Peril. I then tied what historical information I found, to my English focus.
|
My English focus involved myself analyzing Asian typecasts and characters that are found in movies, TV, and pop culture. I broke down these characters and roles down to their historical contexts, that I found while researching history.

Art
For my art aspect of the project I found three Asian artists whose art addressed the status of Asian Americans in today's society. I explained the artist's statements on the piece, the ideas being communicated; and how the artist conveys this statement through the imagery of their art, and their artistic process.
