The College Application Process

What artistic enviroment are you seeking from a school?
York, Pennsylvania has not been generous to me in terms of artistic opportunities and influences. With a grand total of three art stores within a fifty mile radius, it’s obvious that my creative environment has not been the best. Even though I am attending a large public school, there are not many artists with goals similar to mine. It seems that I am always reminded that where I am does not cater to the creative type. With this in mind, I am seeking a school that allows me to be surrounded by people that will make me a better artist and build upon my creative process. I know that PAFA can give me this environment after attending their summer academy program in the summer of 2016. This program gave me the opportunity to explore my creative abilities in a college setting and allowed me to fully experience a positive artistic environment.
My art process is not consistent and I don’t mind that my creativity works that way. With every piece I make, I gain a new experience and outlook onto my development as an artist. I am looking for a school that can allow me to take different routes in terms of my works and projects. I do not want an environment that pigeonholes me into a process and forces me to stick with it. Whether it be painting or illustration, discovering new ways of approaching a piece is one of my favorite parts of art. Having the ability to attend a school that surrounds me with artists, all with different approaches to their craft, is ideal.
Not only is it important for me to be able to have diversity in my artistic approach, it is also important to me where this environment will be located. Before I even began to look into specific schools, I needed to find a place that would constantly inspire me. No matter what road I would turn, I wanted a city that would make me question my art and urge me to find answers. After those 5 weeks in Philadelphia, creating at PAFA, I had finally felt at home. York, Pa has never felt like a home to me. The constant fight to find some sort of inspiration from a town that is as exciting as a stale saltine cracker, is to say the least, exhausting. Knowing I could find a school that surrounds me with new ideas and a city that I would showcase those ideas to, was a huge weight that I could finally take off my shoulders. Philly is the never-resting environment I want so badly for my college experience.
I hope that within my writing it's easy to see what artistic environment I am seeking. It has been so difficult for me as an artist to expand my creative ability in the current environment I'm surrounded by. College has always been my getaway plan to become a better creator and I expect nothing less from PAFA to make that plan happen.
