Have you ever wondered what it was like for Vincent Van Gogh to paint over 900 paintings and only sell one in his lifetime? What about Emily Dickinson, who published less than a dozen poems in her lifetime? In my project, "Misfits Redeemed," I research these two misfits who were redeemed after they died. In English, I wrote a spoken word poem about someone who doesn't fit in, until they pass away and they are finally noticed. For art, I created a clay sculpture of a misfit toy, which has parts from multiple animals and fabrics. For History, I wrote a paper about Vincent Van Gogh's life and why he was so odd. I then went on to hypothesize what his life would be like if he were living today. This project was a lot of fun, and I really enjoyed all parts of it. It pushed me to completely imagine all the things a different time period would have an effect on a persons life, and it pushed me to go out of my comfort zone an write and perform spoken word.
Art:
For the art portion of this project, I created a misfit toy. I considered recreating a character from the Island of Misfit Toys on Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, but I decided I wanted to create something completely different from anything else. I made what I call a "Uni-catopus" out of clay. I wanted the entire thing to be a misfit toy, so I used clay because you can't really play with it because it is hard. It has a unicorn horn, the head and front legs of a cat, then it transitions into a octopus in the back. In the front, half the face is made to look like a Tim Burton character, while the other half is made to look like a rag doll, roughly based off the doll Lilo makes in Lilo and Stitch. The tentacles of the octopus are painted to look like Ursula's from The Little Mermaid, but they are intentionally thinner than any octopus tentacles would be. The cat half of the body and the octopus half have stitching and stuffing to make it look like they have been haphazardly sewn together. |

English:
For the English portion of this project, I wrote a spoken word poem. In the poem, the speaker starts out as someone who is not noticed and is unloved. They go through life as a misfit and wallflower to be ignored. Then, the speaker dies, and tells of how now that they are gone, they are finally being noticed and appreciated. In this poem, I allude to the spotted elephant from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Vincent Van Gogh's "Starry Night" painting, and poems by Emily Dickinson. I did this because all three were misfits who eventually became loved and respected. |
History:
For the History portion of this project, I wrote an analysis paper about Vincent Van Gogh. I wrote about Van Gogh's life and why he was such an outcast, and then I wrote about what I think Van Gogh would be like if he were growing up in today's culture. I predicted that if Van Gogh were living today, he would not be as odd because he would have counseling, he would go to school through graduation instead of not being able to finish because of money, and he would be able to stick with ministry, which was what he originally wanted to do. He could have become an artist, and many people would know of his work and like it, because we celebrate all kinds of diversity. However, it would probably still be hard for him to sell his work, because today, people are content to have just a picture of art work, instead of the actual art work. |
