For my third project, I had trouble deciding what to do. I was talking to my mom, and she said to do something that would help prepare me for my future. I want to be a pastor, so I decided to do a personal project in which I discover what I believe about a very important issue: The LGBTQ community and christians' reactions to them. It is something that I felt was very important, specifically because I have friends who identify with the LGBTQ community, and I never knew how to interact with that part of them. Through my project, I learned first hand what the bible actually says about such matters, what biblical scholars and pastors believe about it, as well as others who have taken the time to express their feelings through blog posts online. My history portion is where all my research is found. I wrote a journal in which I reflected on what I was learning, and what I decided about what I was learning. For English, I wrote a poem that represented the transition that transgender people go through, as well as the way homosexual people are mistreated by Christians. For art, I made a sculpture that represented a Christian girl supporting the LGBTQ community, while still being rooted in God. This represented my main belief; even though I don't agree with what they are doing, I believe that as Christians we should support everyone as people, not neglect them because of their sin. Because in the end, no sin is greater than the next.

Art
For my art portion, I created a sculpture to represent my main belief on the subject of the LGBTQ community: We should be rooted in God first, and then we should support the LGBTQ community as people. My sculpture is of a girl whose hair is flowing upward to show that she is rooted in God. However, when she is turned upside down, you see a rainbow-colored rose, the represent the LGBTQ community. As a stem supports the flower, the Christian should support the LGBTQ community. |
English
For my English portion, I wrote a poem to represent the transition that transgender people go through, as well as the way homosexual people are mistreated by Christians. For this poem, I talked to two of my friends who are a part of the LGBTQ community, to gain more understanding about what it was like for them. I then used some quotes from talking with them, as well as scripture, to write the poem. In the beginning of the poem, it is all scripture. In the center, it goes back and forth between scripture and quotes from my friends about the LGBTQ life and experiences. The end of the poem is them all about the LGBTQ life and desires. I chose to write it like this to show the transtion that someone getting procedures done to change gender goes through. In the beginning, they are physically all their orgininal gender. as they are in the middle of their transitioning, they are changing so much that they have parts from both genders. Then, once the transition is done, they are completely their new gender. |

History
For my history portion, I did research to find more information and opinions about the LGBTQ community. I looked to the bible to see what God said about homosexuality, and interpreted it the way I understood it, instead of relying on other people's opinions. I then looked at blog posts of historians, pastors, and others to learn what other people believe. I then wrote in my journal, focusing on what I learned from my research and my response to others' opinions. I wrote about what I agreed with as well as what I disagreed with. Although I knew my teachers would be reading this journal, I wrote as if it were just a personal journal that no one else needed to see. |
I really liked this project. It is definitely my favorite out of all the projects I have done, this year and last. I love that I was able to focus on something so important, because I think it is very important to know what you personally believe, instead of just what your parents or church believe. I am glad to now have my opinions on the matter down on paper, and I definitely want to continue writing in the ame manner about other controversial issues, so I can figure out my stances and know myself more before I go to college next year.
