When he would ride the bus with his father, his father would point out women and say things like “You see her? She’s a prostitute,” and “She is worth nothing. So as a child he was being influenced in a very negative way by his father. Gary’s mother was a very attractive woman as well as a very sexual one. He admits having sexual feelings towards his mother since he was young. He also admits having sexual fantasies about her. As a teen Gary started showing destructive behavior. He started fires all the time. Gary even stabbed a six year old, almost killing him. He lured him into the bushes and told him that he just wanted to know how it felt to kill someone.
Gary graduated 2 years after he was supposed too. At the age of 21 he married his girlfriend and joined the navy. His wife admitting to having an affair while he was gone. He married again and loved to have sex where people were able to discover them. His second wife divorced him when his son turned 5. Ridgway then became very obsessed with prostitutes.
In 1982, a man in a river near by town discovered two dead bodies in the river. He reported it to the police who found a third person dead. These women were later identified as Opal Mills who was 16 years old, Cynthia Jean who was 17 years old and Marsha Chapman who was 31 years old. These women were all prostitutes. By fall of 1982, 5 women were discovered in the river. September 15, 1982, a woman named Mary who was 8 and a half months pregnant was discovered near the river. April of 1983, a girl was seen being taken by Ridgway. By June 1983, 26 woman disappeared. By 1984, 40 women disappeared.
In 1988, Gary married once again. His wife tells police that for 13 years he was the most amazing husband. As technology advanced in time, Gary was convicted of killing four dozen women. They were going to sentence him to death but he offered to show them each place he dumped a body so he was sentenced to 48 life terms in prison.
He admitted to the fed that he would have sex with the woman first and as soon as they were finished he would jump on them and strangle them. He would whisper to them, “Don’t fight and I’ll let you go,” he said he felt the need to kill them.
